Multiple sclerosis and Viagra



Spanish researchers from Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB) have recently published an article that claims that Viagra reduces in a drastic manner the symptoms of multiple sclerosis observed in animal models. The results of this research were published in “Acta Neuropathologica”, a respected peer-reviewed medical journal. The results were amazingly encouraging: 50% of all treated animals showed a complete recovery only eight days after beginning treatment. Clinical trials should be expected in the short term, since people who Buy Viagra have already proved it to be a safe drug.

This research was lead by Dr. Agustina García from UAB's Institute of Biotechnology and Medicine, and Dr. Juan Hidalgo, from UAB's Institute of Neurosciences. For their study, they specifically targeted the effect of Viagra on an animal model of MS known as Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis. The final results showed that treating mice on a daily basis with a chemical substance called sildenafil citrate, which is the main active component in both name-brand Viagra and generic Viagra, promptly reduced the disease's symptoms to the point of full recovery for half the study subjects only 8 days later. Observable improvement was noted on a reduction of inflammatory cells infiltrating into the spinal chord, which in turn reduced damage to the axon of the nerve cell and facilitated the repair of myelin.

It is now of interest to determine if any other components from erectile dysfunction medications may deliver similar beneficial effects. In fact, both Cialis and Levitra, the other two big names in the ED market, contain active chemical compounds that are very similar in nature to sildenafil. Recent studies, including one published in 2010 by this same scientific team, suggest that this drugs not only act in the body as vasodilators, but also may have neuroprotective properties and could potentially assist in the treatment of cerebrovascular stroke and chronic neuropathologies such as Alzheimer's disease.
